Bible verses about temptation
God's promises for the moment temptation hits: 20 verses from the King James Bible, each with a short note on using it.
Temptation isn't a sign that something is uniquely wrong with you. Scripture calls it "common to man", and Jesus himself was tempted in every way we are. What the Bible offers is a promise that there is always a way of escape, a picture of how Jesus fought back with Scripture he already knew, and grace for the times you don't stand.
God’s promise in temptation
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Three promises in one verse: you aren’t uniquely broken, it won’t be more than you can bear, and there is always a way of escape. Your part is to take it.
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
Enduring temptation isn’t failing to escape it. It’s faithfulness, and it comes with a promise.
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
Deliverance is God’s work before it’s yours. He knows how to get you out.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
A very present help: not distant, not later, but right now, in the moment it hits.
Where temptation comes from
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
God never tempts you. Temptation works on desires already inside you, which is why the fight is won by changing what you want, not only what you see.
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Sober and vigilant: temptation hunts the tired, the isolated and the unguarded. And you aren’t the only one; your brothers and sisters face the same.
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Jesus said this to disciples who meant well and fell asleep anyway. Willingness isn’t enough; watching and praying is the plan.
How Jesus fought temptation
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Jesus answered every temptation with “It is written.” He fought with Scripture he already knew, which is why memorizing it matters.
For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
Jesus was tempted himself, and that makes him able to help you when you are.
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
He was tempted in every way and didn’t sin, so you can come boldly instead of hiding, and find help in the exact moment you need it.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Jesus taught us to ask for this every day. Praying it ahead of time is part of the defense.
Standing firm
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Submit first, then resist. The promise is that the devil flees, not you.
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Strength in the Lord, not willpower alone. The armour is for standing against wiles: schemes and patterns. Temptation has a strategy, so you should too.
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Thoughts can be taken captive. You don’t have to entertain every image or idea that shows up.
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
The one in you is greater than anything pulling at you.
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Paul wrote this about enduring every circumstance through Christ. That includes this one.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Fear and shame make temptation stronger. God’s answer is his presence: I am with thee.
When you’ve given in
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
Hiding a sin keeps it alive. Confessing and forsaking it is where mercy is found.
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
When someone falls, restore him gently, and watch yourself. Accountability is meant to be humble and two-way.
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
More than conquerors, through him that loved us. Victory starts from being loved, not from earning it.
How to use these verses in the moment
- Memorize one this week. Jesus answered temptation with "It is written". Scripture you already know is there when your phone isn't and when you can't think straight.
- Say it out loud when it hits, then do the next right thing straight away: leave the room, put the phone face down, call someone.
- Make no provision. Put real barriers between you and what tempts you before the moment comes (Romans 13:14).
- Don't fight alone. Tell someone you trust, and be that person for them (Galatians 6:1).
